In the past five years or so, I’ve lived in a handful of cities — Hawaii, Los Angeles, London and New York City to be exact — and one of the things that I always find tough is making my ‘home away from home’ really feel like home to me. While Hawaii will always be where my heart is, I’ve learned a few key tricks to making my apartment feel like somewhere that I can relax and not get that homesick feeling…because 20 somethings still get homesick from time to time, am I right?!
My top tip is to fill your new place with scents and smells that remind you of home. When Malie Organics gave me a bunch of fun products to try out, the scents were so unreal that I knew immediately I wanted to put them in my NYC apartment to remind me of home. Some of my favorites are the Plumeria soy candle and the Mango Nectar eau de perfume. Another one of my favorite things to do when I’m exhausted from the hustle and bustle of NYC is to take a hot bath and just relax. I’ve already done this once since I’ve been back and the Plumeria shampoo and conditioner and Coconut Vanilla body wash were the perfect complement!
My next tip is to fill your apartment with fresh flowers or indoor plants to make your space feel that much more homey and welcoming. You can grab a dozen roses from an NYC flower stand for $5 and they honestly put a smile on my face every time I glance over at them. My last tip? Add fun decor elements that remind you of home — I scored the ALOHA sign pictured in my living room below and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
Malie Organics is a line of all-natural organic, Hawaiian luxury spa and beauty products. They use only indigenous and local Hawaiian flora and every ingredient in Malie’s products is safe and nontoxic, with absolutely no petroleum, mineral spirits, sulfates or paragons — my favorite part. Their newest product is the Luxe Cream Bar Soap and you can use the code ‘EMMAWO’ to get one completely free with any purchase (valued at $16.50). Let me know what you think of the products — trust me they do not disappoint!
