Sometimes all you need to clear your head is a weekend away from it all. Even though Hawaii is the most isolated place on earth, even just island hopping feels like a true vacation. Last weekend, Holden and I flew to Maui with some friends to hang out in Kaanapali on Maui’s west side and have a staycation at The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas. We flew in early in the morning, drove into Paia and had breakfast at Paia Inn Café (a must!) then drove through Makawao into Kula where we visited the Alii Kula Lavender Farm and enjoyed the fresh country air. Around check-in time, we headed over to the resort and dined at its poolside restaurant Mauka Makai. The misoyaki butterfish and kona lobster were to die for. While the nightlife in Maui is actually on point, we really just wanted to use the weekend to relax and catch up on some much needed rest, so we played board games (bananagrams, anyone?) and watched Wonder Woman in our room until we passed out.
The next morning was dedicated to the spa, and if you ask me I couldn’t have dreamt up a better game plan. My friend Michelle and I both had the 80-minute Nanea Ritual at Spa Helani which included a full-body massage with aromatherapy oil and heated lava shells (pictured above). OK side note on these shells — it’s kind of like a hot stone massage if you’ve had one before but the shells are heated naturally using lava rock and a special gel. While we were getting massages, the boys headed down the beach to go jump off some big rock into the ocean — seriously why do guys like to do this? Haha! After the spa we headed to meet the guys and hang out in a cabana by the pool where we ate lunch, drank smoothies, watched some TV and swam in the pool. The whole time I was wishing that my niece and nephew were there with me because this resort was SO kid friendly. They had splash pads, a kids pool and water slide. Even the layout of the villas — we had a two-bedroom suite that had room for 6 — was perfect for big groups where you all want to stay together like girls getaways and family trips.
The second night we did a grocery store haul and barbecued on at their grill stations which was such a fun way to spend our last night. Plus, we wanted to enjoy the beautiful room since the weekend seemed to be flying by so quickly. Then when we were due to fly home on Sunday, our flights kept getting cancelled due to high winds at the West Maui airport, so while we were supposed to get back in the morning, we ended up not getting back until like 10pm. That said, we were so relaxed by that point that we just enjoyed our day at the airport playing games, eating pizza and having long talks. 10 out of 10 for the weekend if you ask me!
Thank you to The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas for hosting our stay!
