I’ll be the first to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with fitness. I grew up playing volleyball and played all the way until I graduated from high school — basically I worked out every day without even realizing it because I simply loved what I was doing. Then came college, and it was a different story. I wasn’t playing volleyball anymore, and putting in hours at the gym just wasn’t my thing. I struggled with the fact that a lot of my identity used to be so closely tied to being an athlete and all of a sudden I considered it a success when I climbed a flight of stairs without becoming winded.
But finally I had my aha moment — I needed to find workouts that didn’t feel like working out, and I found that in spin, yoga and kickboxing. I even became a spin instructor as my part-time college job. What I loved about all three was that they challenged me and were an actual skill that I could get better at with each class. Even while I was in hardcore training mode for Miss Hawaii and Miss USA, I continued to incorporate each one into my fitness routine.
When anyone asks me how to jumpstart their fitness routine, one of my tips is to go out and stock up on some fabulous workout wear. There’s something about having new gear that makes you want to get in the gym, studio or outdoors ASAP. And they don’t need to be expensive either! Some of my favorite gear — and the outfit I’m wearing in this post — is from GapFit for Factory and the entire outfit was less than $50. I love that their collection lets you mix and match classic, basic styles with trendier patterned pieces and pops of colors.
