Despite being born and raised in Hawaii, I’m naturally fair skinned and have been my whole life. I remember being teased about it back in junior high, but I’ve since learned to love it. However, there are a few times when a sun-kissed glow is a must, and instead of lying in the sun for hours, I choose to fake bake. Before I was Miss Hawaii USA I was Miss Hawaii Teen USA in 2008, suffice it to say I’ve tried almost every self tanner under the sun and failed miserably more times than I’d like to admit. Covering up your streaky tan with long sleeves and jeans is no fun in 80 degree weather, trust me. But I think I’ve finally mastered it, and here’s my checklist for getting the perfect sunless tan:
1 & 2. Shave your legs and exfoliate like you mean it. I use ili coffee scrub and highly recommend it, but you can also use plain old sugar or your favorite scrub.
3. Buy San Tropez sunless tanner and tanning mitt (the mitt makes all the difference!, links at bottom of post)
4. Pump the tanning mousse directly onto mitt.
5. Massage into your skin in circular motions working from your toes to your neck, making sure you don’t miss any spots. Once I get all the way up to my neck, I’ll do a second layer for a deeper tan.
Tips: Let dry for 5 minutes before putting clothes on, and when you do, wear dark, loose clothing. I recommend doing this before bed so it has time to set, then shower the next morning. If it’s not as dark as you would like it, simply do another layer the next day. To clean the mitt, use a mild soap or brush cleanser and ring out under running water until the mitt returns to its normal color. Let it dry by placing it over the top of your tanning solution bottle.
