When it comes to fashion we all have our ‘comfort zone’ that makes us feel stylish while still feeling completely ourselves. Some of us feel at home in jeans and a t-shirt, and some of us feel our very best in dresses and skirts. As long as your comfort zone matches your style, it’s great. That said, there may be a time when your comfort zone is keeping you from fully expressing your personal style and you get an urge to try something just a little bit different. For me, my comfort zone is jeans, sweaters and dresses mostly in neutral hues, my favorites being black, white and blush tones. I also gravitate toward silhouettes that cinch in at the waist or allow me to tuck my top into my high-waisted jeans. Also, I’ve been told I don’t wear a lot of color! So here are a few tips for taking your wardrobe one step out of the box while steel feeling 100% yourself:
- Take it slow. Pairing one funkier piece like a statement shoe or a metallic pleated skirt with your favorite, go-to basics like jeans, simple tops, and blazers will assure a smooth transition. Once you feel comfortable with that baby step, you can gradually add more pieces into the mix.
- Never compromise fit. No matter the print, color or fabrication, great fitting clothes are the key to looking good and feeling even better. With the dress above, wearing bold floral prints is something relatively new to me, but I still felt comfortable because the silhouette itself was 100% my style.
- Schedule a try-on date with a friend. There are so many new trends that I want to try but I end up going back and forth on whether they’re for me. But the best way to find out is to grab a friend, get to the mall, and get to it! You can even snap some dressing room shots for you to look back at later before you buy.
