Over the years, I’ve probable sampled and used well over a hundred makeup products, some of which BLEW MY MIND and some of which I wanted to throw straight in the trash. This month, my sister got me majorly hooked on YouTube beauty videos this month that have been eating up a lot of my time, but the major benefit is that I’ve learned about a ton of drugstore products that are not only amazing but a fraction of the cost of department store brands or Sephora. I also love that I can get an idea of what people are loving and hating so I don’t have to waste time or money on products that are just okay. First, a disclaimer that I use well over 12 products to get ready (even for a natural makeup look!), but if for some reason I was traveling or limited to only a few things, these would be the ones I’d pack. Here they are listed in order or application:
I’ve mentioned this product before, but I just love the consistency. It feels and goes on similar to the Smashbox primer and really helps to minimize pores.
2. Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation in Y245
When it’s a little cooler outside I love using a BB cream, but during the summer I switch it up so I don’t look to oily. I used to use the old Make Up For Ever HD foundation before it was reformulated, and just bought my first bottle of the Ultra HD version. I find that the consistency is a little more liquid-ey so you need more product, but overall same flawless finish.
3. Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer in Fair (on sale!)
Honorable mention for drugstore concealers goes to Maybelline Fit Me concealer, but I went with the age rewind because it’s a thinner consistency so it doesn’t get cakey on your face, especially in the summer months. The applicator is a foam ball (I honestly have no better way to describe this) so it’s not the most hygienic, but what’s inside is amazing. I use this to highlight under by eyes, down the center of my nose, chin, and forehead, then blend out with my beauty blender, and set with powder.
4. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Medium
I love this because it’s a light pressed powder perfect for setting my foundation and concealer, but it has just a touch of shimmer for that luminescent look. I touch up with this throughout the day too and it doesn’t give me cake face (no one wants cake face!).
I love this bronzer. It’s great for contour since it’s matte with no shimmer. They don’t sell this color anymore, but it’s very similar to their milk chocolate soleil bronzer.
6. Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso (on sale!)
I’ve talked about this drugstore blush before but it’s overdue for another shoutout. You can get it for about $6 and because it’s a baked product, it’s so highly pigmented that you only need to tap your brush a couple of times and swipe it on your cheeks. GORGEOUS. I’ve been meaning to order ‘Dolce Pink’ so I think that will be my next purchase.
7. Physicians Formula Shimmer Strip Highlighter in Vegas Strip
This product says its a bronzer but I’ll agree to disagree. It’s the prettiest highlighter and makes you look absolutely radiant if you just apply a little on your cheekbones, cupid’s bow, just above your eyebrows and a little down the center of your nose.
8. ColourPop Eyeshadow in Nillionaire
These are so good. Tons of colors, super pigmented, really affordable.
Super creamy and glides on to make perfect, defined brows. Holy grail brow product for me.
10. L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara in Carbon Black
I recently got eyelash extensions (thanks to Kimmie at Kimmie Jacob!) so I haven’t been using mascara on my top lashes, but this one has a skinny applicator brush and is perfect for bottom lashes.
11. ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Solow
I thank the makeup gods for liquid lipstick every single day because it makes my life so easy! These are a very liquid-like consistency (much more so than their Kat Von D or Stila counterparts) so you need to work quickly, but they do not go anywhere all day. Favorite shades are Solow, 1st Base, and Donut, and I like mixing Midi to my other shades to mellow out the color a bit. Best of all these are $6 each!
I swear it’s been the hottest summer in years here in Hawaii. I can’t even open my sliding doors without feeling like I need another shower. Tatcha’s beauty papers are made of 100 percent natural abaca leaf and gold flake and absorb my excess oil like a champ. They are paper vs. that filmy texture you get in most other blotting sheets so they don’t disturb your makeup whatsoever.
